NAVIGATING EVALUATION AND DIAGNOSIS
At the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite, we evaluate and diagnose children ages 5 to 14 with dyslexia and suggest next steps for intervention and treatment. Our evaluations include measures to assess a child’s:
- Academic skills
- Cognitive and developmental abilities
- Social and emotional functioning
After the evaluation, clinicians discuss diagnostic findings and recommend next steps with parents and families, helping them discern the best path forward.
To be eligible for an evaluation, a child must be proficient in English and have a suspected learning disorder or challenge.
Before beginning the evaluation process, a parent or family member must complete an application, which our clinical team reviews to ensure we are able to provide the support and services your child needs.
We've created these resources to help parents and families understand and work through the steps of application, evaluation and diagnosis:
EXPLORE PROVEN DYSLEXIA INTERVENTIONS
Scottish Rite is nationally recognized for our evidence-based curricula that help children with dyslexia learn to read.
Our programs support children across all developmental stages, ensuring each child achieves their learning goals. Curricula reflect structured literacy principles, components and methods. In addition, we ground all our programs in research and conduct scientific studies that verify effectiveness.
Public and private school districts, tutoring organizations and other education providers use our curricula to help children with dyslexia learn to read and write with confidence. A child may also be eligible to enroll in classes through The Center’s Dyslexia Laboratory School on Scottish Rite’s Dallas campus.
Children who participate in our programs consistently show faster progress, better results and sustained outcomes over time.
Note: Children with specific learning disabilities, including dyslexia, are eligible by law to receive accommodations in public schools, including special instruction and more time to complete assignments.
