Aidan – BMW Dallas Marathon Patient Champion

Since 2007, the Patient Champion program has enlisted Scottish Rite Hospital patients to help encourage and cheer on runners in the BMW Dallas Marathon. This program is a way to highlight some of the wonderful kids the marathon generously supports each year. We’re excited to introduce you to Aidan!

Aidan, age 10, of Frisco, has been a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for the past year, where he receives treatment for Perthes Disease in his right leg. The physicians in the Center for Excellence in Hip conduct groundbreaking research to determine the best treatment plan for each and every patient, including Aidan.

Aidan’s favorite part about coming to Scottish Rite Hospital is playing in the Child Life Playroom, where he can “escape” and play videogames with other kids, just like he does at home.

Outside of the hospital, Aidan enjoys spending time with his family and friends and loves to play sports.  He plays four different sports, and his family of six all plays soccer. He is is eager to join them again back on the field!
Aidan’s doctors are experts in caring for children and someday he hopes to be an expert in caring for the community. He aspires to become a Police Officer and with his big heart and positive attitude, he is sure to succeed!

Hi everyone! I’m Jasmine, a patient at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in the complex adolescent foot and ankle clinic. My journey started around August 2013, when I began to notice an aching pain in my left foot. As an athlete, I never thought anything of the pain, other than just soreness. As the pain progressed, my parents decided to take me to an orthopedic surgeon. After several visits with the doctor, which resulted without a diagnosis, plus the idea that I was “just imagining the pain,” I gave up hope in finding relief.

In July 2016, at my annual physical, my parents mentioned that I was still experiencing agonizing foot pain. My doctor then referred me to Scottish Rite Hospital, with the hope of finding some answers. As a patient who had previously had my concerns dismissed, I was terrified of hospitals and doctors. My first appointment was with Dr. Podeszwa, where I was diagnosed with bilateral flat feet and accessory navicular. Flat feet is a condition where the arches of my foot were collapsed and accessory navicular is where I have an extra bone on the inside of my foot. Dr.Podeszwa sent me to be fitted for custom orthotics and also referred me to the complex adolescent foot and ankle clinic with Dr. Riccio and Dr. Zide.

I wore the custom orthotics for a while, but they were not successful and at this point it looked like surgery was my next option. During this time, other aspects of my life were changing due to the constant pain I was experiencing. I stopped hanging out with friends because I was always thinking about my foot pain. Also, the thought of quitting taekwondo, a sport I loved, was becoming more and more present.

Dr. Riccio and Dr. Zide came up with a plan to remove my accessory navicular and reconstruct my foot to form an arch. I had my first surgery on my left foot in March 2017. After the surgery, I stayed in the hospital overnight and was discharged the next day. I was in a splint for two weeks, a cast for six weeks, a boot for four weeks and before I knew it, was walking with normal shoes. Like any surgery, recovery is far from easy, but thanks to the wonderful care I received at Scottish Rite Hospital, it was so much better.

In June of 2018, I had the exact same surgical reconstruction performed on my right foot. Since I had already undergone this same surgery on my left foot, the second surgery was a breeze. My recovery on my right foot was picturesque. It was as easy and simple as recovering from surgery could be. Currently, I am five months post-op from my second surgery and I can say that I am feeling great!

MY NUMBER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE IS TO STAY POSITIVE! ALWAYS KNOW THAT YOU CAN GET THROUGH ANYTHING AND THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALONE.

Everyone is rooting for you to have a successful and smooth road towards recovery, including your family, friends and especially the people at the hospital. Recovery isn’t always easy, but the end result will always be worth it! My surgery gave me back my life. Because of Dr. Riccio, Dr. Zide and their staff, I can do whatever I want without having to worry about pain!

Scottish Rite Hospital means hope and happiness to me. Because of my experience here, I want to become an orthopedic surgeon. My dream is to give patients hope and “give children back their childhood,” just like Dr. Riccio and Dr. Zide have done for me.

I also had the opportunity to participate in the Perry Initiative Program, which gave me the opportunity to take a closer look into orthopedics. Through this program, I was able to meet Dr. McIntosh. She has encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.  I have been able to shadow Dr. McIntosh, Dr.Riccio and Dr.Zide in each of their clinics.

I MAY ONLY BE 17 YEARS OLD, BUT I CANNOT IMAGINE MY FUTURE DOING ANY OTHER JOB. 

To everyone at Scottish Rite Hospital, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You have completely flipped my fear of hospitals upside-down and I now have the opportunity to live my life pain-free.

Ronald McDonald House of Dallas (RMHD) hosted a ribbon-cutting on Friday for its first family room, which is located at Scottish Rite for Children Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Frisco.

The mayor of Frisco, Jeff Cheney, was joined at the ribbon cutting by Leigh-Ellen Norman and members of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, leadership from Scottish Rite Hospital, including President and CEO Robert L. “Bob” Walker, the VP of North Campus Jeremy Howell and Assistant Chiefs of Staff Karl Rathjen, M.D. and Philip L. Wilson, M.D, along with the CEO of RMHD Jill Cumnock and RMHD Board Chair Doug Smellage.

For nearly 40 years, RMHD has served as a home-away-from-home to families while their children are being treated for critical illnesses or injuries locally.

The House has traditionally helped families with three daily meals as well as both day and overnight accommodations from its location in Dallas’ Southwestern Medical District.

The new Ronald McDonald Family Room comfortably accommodates 25 people and offers a place of temporary respite, relaxation and comfort to families with children receiving outpatient care at Scottish Rite in Frisco.

Research shows that staying close by allows parents to better communicate with their child’s medical team and improves adherence to complicated treatment plans.  Families with access to a Ronald McDonald Family Room report a better overall clinical experience.

Currently, RMHD hosts 1,400 families annually, but expects the Family Room will help serve approximately 1,000 additional people each year. With the Dallas-area pediatric population expected to increase 27 percent by 2025, RMHD has been taking measures to accommodate as many more families as possible in the years ahead.

In September, RMHD broke ground on The Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation Wing, an $11.5 million expansion that will add 30 additional guest rooms to its Southwestern Medical District location.

Getting a good sleep each night after a sports-related concussion might be linked to a shorter recovery time in adolescents, new research suggests.

Young athletes who slept well after a concussion were more likely to recover within two weeks, while those who slept poorly were more likely to endure symptoms for 30 days or more, according to research presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics conference in Orlando, Florida.

It’s not clear, however, whether poor sleep was a cause or a consequence of the more severe symptoms in kids who slept poorly after their injury, Dr. Jane Chung, Pediatric Sports Medicine Physician at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas, told Reuters Health by email.

“Pediatricians and healthcare providers taking care of young athletes should assess sleep quality at the initial clinic visit for concussions in an effort to predict those at risk for prolonged recovery,” Chung said.

The average age of the 356 children in the study was 14. Researchers had them complete a questionnaire called the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Based on the results, the kids were categorized into two groups: 261 good sleepers and 95 poor sleepers.

At follow-up visits three months later, both groups of patients had improved, but the good sleepers continued to have significantly better symptom and sleep scores.

“This study highlights the importance of sleep, a critical factor in the recovery from a concussion,” says Dr. Gerard Goia, Chief of Pediatric Neuropsychology at Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC, who was not involved in the research.

“These findings are highly consistent with our own clinical experience in treating children and adolescents with concussion, in that poor sleep is a significant limiting factor in recovery,” Dr. Goia said.

With its large sample size and findings, the study is strongly suggestive, but its observational design can only provide limited information about causality, Dr. Goia says.

In a notable sidebar, the researchers found that girls were more likely to sleep poorly than boys. “This discrepancy could be due to the higher prevalence of depression in girls, but recent evidence suggests it may go beyond psychosocial disparities. It may be related to gender-based differences in the biology of sleep. Further research is needed in this area,” Chung said.

That line of research may have to take the bench for now, however. Instead, Chung’s team plans to investigate the effect of sleep quality interventions on concussion recovery.
