Amputee Ski Trip Spotlight: Vanessa, age 15 of Midland

Vanessa, age 15, of Midland has been treated for multiple prosthetic needs at Scottish Rite Hospital since she was only 6 weeks old. Vanessa’s looking forward to learning to ski, but she’s also looking forward to going on a vacation in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Learning to ski will allow Vanessa to add another sport to her list of favorite activities. She enjoys playing volleyball, managing the basketball at her high school and crafting intricate pieces of origami. When Vanessa grows up, she aspires to become a junior high teacher. She hasn’t decided which subject to teach – she’s keeping her options open!

February 2018 will mark the 37th anniversary of the annual Amputee Ski Trip, held each year at the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. Fourteen teenage patients with limb differences receive practical recreational therapy, while also having the opportunity to grow, build confidence and bond with others similar to them.

Amputee Ski Trip Spotlight: Cydney, age 16 of Valley View

Cydney, age 16 of Valley View, has been treated for prosthetic needs at Scottish Rite Hospital since she was a baby. Her doctor, J.A. “Tony” Herring, M.D., chief of staff emeritus, has inspired Cydney to pursue a medical degree in pediatric care once she graduates from college. In Cydney’s spare time, she enjoys reading My Sister’s Keeper, working and playing in her high school’s band. Her favorite musical instrument to play is the marimba. This will be Cydney’s first time on the ski trip and she’s excitedly anticipating the opportunity to ski for the first time!

Maya, age 17 of Buda, has been treated for prosthetic needs for the past three years at Scottish Rite Hospital. In Maya’s spare time, she enjoys running track, reading The Hunger Games series and drawing. Inspired by her time spent at the hospital, she hopes to become a nurse when she grows up. This will be Maya’s first time to go on the ski trip and she is most excited about seeing snow – since she has never seen it before!

Amputee Ski Trip Spotlight: Alfonso, age 15 of Bedford

Alfonso, age 15 of Bedford, has been treated for hand differences and prosthetic needs at Scottish Rite Hospital since he was five years old. Alfonso dreams of one day becoming an English teacher and his favorite book is Perks of Being a Wallflower. His prosthetist Kara Davis describes him as a “very fun-loving, active kid” and his adventurous spirit is infectious to all who meet him. Alfonso went on the Amputee Ski Trip for the first time in 2017 and is looking forward to seeing friends he made on last year’s trip and making new friends.

The fact that patients can still receive treatment regardless of the family’s ability of payment.

Patience 

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
Medical Assistant/ Billing and Coding for a Pediatric office. I completed the Medical Assistant program.

Chuck Wyatt, CPNP, RNFA is a Certified Nurse Practitioner who has been working at the hospital for the past three and a half years. Learn more about him in our SRH Staff Spotlight below.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
First assisting in the operating room

What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
The genuine benevolence of the culture and the people who work at Scottish Rite Hospital.

Describe a typical day.

  • Wake up at 4:30 am and quickly find a lame excuse not to work out
  • Arrive at work by 6:00 am and work on charting
  • Either begin seeing patients or scrub in to surgery by 8:00 am
  • Finish up around 6:00 pm

How did you find out about the hospital?
Through the hospital’s relationship between UTSW and Children’s.

What made you want to work here?
I wanted to be a part of helping grow the Sports Medicine Center into the best pediatric sports medicine practice in the country.

What skills do you need for your job?
A strong work ethic, commitment to excellence in patient care and a strong interest in clinical research.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
Staff RN in Cardiology/Renal at Children’s in Dallas.
I obtained my masters in nursing at TWU while working full time nights and weekends at Children’s.
