The Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine team provides care for orthopedic patients who have related neurological disorders and neuromuscular diseases. We specialize in these neuro-orthopedic conditions, providing diagnosis and treatments built around your child’s needs and goals.
Our Approach to Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine
Neurological conditions, like cerebral palsy or tuberous sclerosis, can affect your child’s bones, joints, mobility, gait and overall musculoskeletal development.
Our Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine team specializes in children whose neurologic conditions affect their orthopedic health and movement. We focus specifically on how the brain, nerves and muscles work together.
We perform detailed neurological evaluations to understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Then, we create a clear plan that supports function and long-term development.
Experts Working Together
At Scottish Rite, you’ll find a medical home for your child. We offer the specialized care your child needs in one place.
Our Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine team manages tone, mobility and function, while coordinating care with other specialists.
This often includes coordinating your child’s neurological care with:
- Orthopedics, including spine surgery, foot and ankle specialists, hand and upper extremity specialists
- Therapy Services, including physical therapy and occupational therapy
- Psychology to support emotional health, including anxiety and depression
- Nutrition Services to help with feeding and weight challenges
Specialized Clinics
Our neurologists play a key role and provide multidisciplinary care for complex neuro-orthopedic conditions, including:
- Cerebral Palsy Movement Clinic
- Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) Clinic
- Hereditary Spastic Paraparesis (HSP) Clinic
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth Clinic
In these clinics, your child can see multiple specialists during one coordinated visit. This saves time and ensures everyone is aligned on the care plan.
Our TSC Clinic, established in 1990, was one of the first in the country and helped shape national care models. In 2012, we launched the nation’s first pediatric HSP clinic, expanding specialized care for this rare condition. Decades of focused experience allow our team to recognize patterns early and guide your child’s care accordingly.
What to Expect
Your first visit with our Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine team will start with a review of your child’s symptoms and health history. We’ll also spend time determining how their neurological condition is affecting their movement and orthopedic health.
You may see just one provider or several coordinated services on a single visit depending on your child’s needs. These visits are thorough and may take longer than a typical appointment.
At this appointment, we’ll take the time to get to know you and your child. To do this, your first appointment may include:
- A focused neurological exam and movement analysis
- Discussion of child’s function and goals
- Planning for therapy, equipment or nutrition support
- Scheduling in-house testing, which may include MRI, EMG/nerve conduction studies, EEG
We understand that neuro-orthopedic conditions can be overwhelming and challenging for the whole family. At Scottish Rite, we’ll guide you through every step of your child’s journey, making shared decisions about their care.
Why Choose Us?
Advanced safety support during surgery: Scottish Rite neurologists provide in-house, intraoperative neuromonitoring during spine surgery, offering real-time assessment of nerve and spinal cord function during surgery. This allows your child’s surgical team to identify and address any issues quickly, significantly lowering the risk of complications.
Leaders in research: Our Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine team leads and participates in research and national collaborations to improve care for rare neurological and orthopedic conditions. This means your child may have access to treatments and approaches that are not widely available yet.
Nationally recognized clinics: Our specialized clinics for tuberous sclerosis and hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP) were some of the first in the country. These clinics offer your child coordinated, multidisciplinary care that addresses both neurologic and orthopedic needs in one place.
