The most recent Coffee, Kids and Sports Medicine educational series for medical professionals addressed questions about COVID-19 and safety with youth sports participation. For two years, young athletes have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic and its effect on in-person activities, especially sports. Pediatric sports medicine expert Shane M. Miller, M.D., digs into the details of what factors should be considered regarding COVID-19 and returning to sports, as well as the effects of the pandemic on youth’s health and fitness.

The presentation covers case studies on how major sports organizations grappled with COVID-19, including the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. You’ll learn the real facts and figures associated with these events while analyzing the outcomes and how those can be applied to youth sports. Miller breaks down which sports activities are the highest risk for COVID-19 transmission and reviews which factors contribute to higher rates of transmission.

During the course, Miller shares important data and studies about the direct effects of COVID-19 infections in young athletes, including cardiopulmonary considerations and exertional symptoms. Finally, the course gives clear guidelines and recommendations on how to assist patients returning to sports after COVID-19 infection or exposure. This presentation is essential to physicians working directly with young athletes as the threat of COVID-19 persists.
