Get to Know our SRH Staff: Brandee Schmidt, Sports Medicine

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
Each day brings on a new adventure for me. Through several outlets, I am focused on connecting our work at Scottish Rite for Children with the community. This comes in many forms including: developing patient education, organizing clinical education events, building relationship with like-minded organizations and creating messages for the public to better understand the work that we do.

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
In my final year at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, I created a “January-term” experience at Scottish Rite Hospital. I shadowed the physical therapy team for a month and validated my long-standing dream of becoming a pediatric physical therapist. I treated patients in a trauma center for almost ten years before beginning the sports medicine program with Dr. Philip Wilson. I’ve been at the hospital for five years.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
I enjoy working with people who are always looking for ways to be better. From our formal research to constantly improving the patient experience, our staff is genuinely interested in making a positive change in the lives of children.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
Like many physical therapists in my “generation,” my first therapy job was at Healthsouth. I loved treating patients in the brain injury day treatment program there. I moved into pediatrics quickly from there and haven’t left.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love going to new restaurants, hearing live music and spending time with my husband (of nearly twenty years!) and my kids.

Three words to best describe you:
Loyal, honest, recovering-perfectionist

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
For many summers and holiday seasons, I worked for another wonderful local company - The Container Store. I’ve always said my back-up plan would be to organize other people’s stuff.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
On a family vacation in Colorado, I went whitewater rafting in class 4 rapids in the Royal Gorge one morning and swung over it in the afternoon in the “skycoaster” – a swing that sends you momentarily dangling 1,200 feet in the air over the Arkansas River.
