Get to Know our SRH Staff: Evelyn Madu, Dyslexia Lab Coordinator
Evelyn Madu is the Dyslexia Lab Coordinator in our Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders department and has been working at the hospital for the past 14 years. After working for a daycare center in her hometown, Mt. Pleasant, TX, she knew she wanted to become a teacher to fulfill her dream of changing children’s lives. What’s your favorite part of your job?
The favorite part of my job is seeing a child’s life changed when he/she learns to read! I love seeing how they become so confident in themselves as a person! This not only changes their life, but their families’ lives as well.
What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
My favorite thing about the hospital is the wonderful aroma of the popcorn! It doesn’t “smell” like a hospital!
Describe a typical day.
A typical day would be watching videos of therapists in training to become dyslexia therapists, teaching two classes of students with dyslexia, and planning for the dyslexia lab student activities in the Lab School. Every month also consists of teaching teachers to become dyslexia therapists.
How did you find out about the hospital?
I found out about the hospital when I worked as a teacher in the DeSoto ISD 14 years ago. I wanted to learn more about dyslexia and was told this was the best place to come.
What made you want to work here?
The thing that made me want to work here was I knew it would not only be an opportunity to impact children directly here at the hospital, but to train teachers to go out into school districts across the state of Texas. This would allow me to have an impact on other children, families, and teachers in several communities.
What skills do you need for your job?
The skills that I need for my job are being a certified Texas Public School Teacher, a Certified Academic Language Therapist, Qualified Instructor Certification. Lots of patience and grace is needed as well!
What’s your favorite…
If I could have a super power, it would be to have the ability to create peace and love in the hearts of all humans so that there would be no more violence and hatred in the world!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher or a singer or a teacher who would sometimes sing to her students.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Traveled to Nigeria to meet in-laws! It was truly an adventure!
What’s the last book you read?
The Broken Way by: Ann Voskamp
What kind of animal would you be?
The kind of animal I would be is a leopard…. I think their skin is very beautiful!!
How long is your commute? What do you do on the drive?
My commute is 45 minutes to an hour. I love to listen to my favorite radio station: 94.9 KLTY
What is something people don’t know about you?
Something that people don’t know about me is that my husband is a Nigerian Chief and that makes me a “Lola” = la la which means “princess.” So, when I go to Nigeria, people literally bow to greet me! It’s kind of funny!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston
