Get to Know our SRH Staff: Justine Hamilton, Occupational Therapy
What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
On a day-to-day basis, I can be found providing outpatient occupational therapy in the Therapy department or alongside the physicians in their clinics. I am currently receiving specialty training as a therapist with the hand team. The therapy I provide includes custom orthotics, exercise, assistive devices and/or training for modified techniques for activities of daily living. The ultimate goal of all interventions that I provide is that our patients gain or regain the ability to participate in all the wonderful activities that occupy a childhood.
What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
I had previous positions doing pediatric home health therapy and working at an outpatient developmental therapy clinic. I was looking for a position where I had a strong team of other occupational therapists to work alongside and I definitely found that here – therefore they have been stuck with me for three years.
What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
The culture supports and allows us to provide exactly what is best for each child, without some of the restrictions that have unfortunately become very prevalent in our current health care system. One reason for this is the amazing people I get to learn from and work alongside.
What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
Lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons. Almost all my jobs have been tailored to working with kids because there is so much joy and laughter that fills the day when working with children. My love for children and my experience of growing up with a grandmother with multiple sclerosis blended perfectly into my career as a pediatric occupational therapist.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Walking or paddle boarding at White Rock Lake alongside my fiancé and two big, silly ‘twin’ labradoodles, and eating all things sweet.
Three words to best describe you:
Passionate, goofy and chocoholic
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I’d be a baker.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Hiking the Lost Coast Trail along the northern coast of California with some scary moments trying to traverse through high tide.
