Get to Know our SRH Staff: Lisa Allen, B.S.N., R.N., C.P.N.

Lisa Allen is a registered nurse in our Radiology department who has been working at our hospital for almost nine years. Learn more about her in our #SRHstaff Spotlight below:

What’s your favorite part of your job?
Hugs and high-fives from patients! I love getting to know the kids and their families over the years.

What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
The patients, with co-workers being a close second.

Describe a typical day.
Every day is a little different, just like every patient is a little different. My goal is to do whatever it takes to make a positive and safe experience for the kids who come through my area. I may be helping a radiologist in a procedure in ultrasound or fluoroscopy, assisting an anesthesiologist in MRI or CT, coordinating patient care with other nurses or talking to parents before their child’s exam or procedure.

How did you find out about the hospital?
I feel I’ve always known about Scottish Rite Hospital and did my nursing clinicals here as a student. However, it was nurse practitioner, Andi Stick, who encouraged me to join the team.

What made you want to work here?
I’m a former NICU nurse and I was ready to expand my practice to pediatrics. I wanted to remain in a specialized area where I could fully use my hard-earned nursing skills. What I didn’t know before I got here was just how special this hospital is!

What skills do you need for your job?
A smile, kindness, patience and a positive attitude. And some serious nursing skills.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
My first “real job” was in newspaper advertising and marketing in Boulder, CO. I joined the volunteer fire department when I lived in the mountains outside of Boulder where I became certified as an EMT and structure and wildland firefighter. I was promoted to Lieutenant Chief Medical Officer and decided to make a career change. I went to nursing school, had my daughter, fell in love with babies, worked in NICU for six years, stayed home with my daughter for a few years, then came back to nursing ready to take on pediatrics. I feel lucky to have found Scottish Rite Hospital.

What is your favorite…
  • Hospital event: Western Day
  • Food in the cafeteria: Miss Kim’s sandwiches
  • Place in the hospital: The hospital grounds and art, especially the contemporary piece near the parking structure.
What’s your favorite…
  • Place to travel: Anyplace that requires a passport, but I especially love Italy.
  • Type of food: Mediterranean.
  • TV show: Peaky Blinders on Netflix is binge-worthy!
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
X-ray vision (or maybe MRI vision!).

What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was very young I was fascinated by the human brain and I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, later I wanted to study art and photography.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Skied from the 14, 265’ summit of Mount Evans in Colorado.

What’s the last book you read?
Ulysses by James Joyce (I got a trophy and a potato from my book club).

What kind of animal would you be?
A dolphin because they don’t take themselves too seriously, are very intelligent and enjoy being part of a group. They look out for each other and also enjoy having fun!

How long is your commute? What do you do on the drive?
12 minutes; quickly catch up on the phone with one of my brothers or listen to NPR.

What is something people don’t know about you?
My favorite place on the planet is the Mojave Desert and I’m not afraid of bugs or snakes (however, I do respect their space!).

What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I’ll sing anything for my patients or alone in my car, but you will never catch me singing karaoke. I’m shy!
