Get to Know our SRH Staff: Terri Beckwith, Clinical Research Team Lead

Meet Terri - a team lead for hand and hip clinical research who has been at the hospital for four years. Learn more about her in our staff spotlight below:

What’s your favorite part of your job?
Translating research data into relatable and useful information to families. I love working with patients one on one, but bridging what we learn in our studies into everyday life is rewarding.

What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
One of my favorite things about the hospital is the unique personalities of the people who work here. I have made many friendships with my co-workers.

Describe a typical day.
Depending on the season, I may spend more time focused on patient data or writing up a journal article or assisting in a grant application. I am excited to say our research team is beginning to grow, so I also spend time training our new team members.

How did you find out about the hospital?
I’m a Texas native so I’ve always known it existed.

What made you want to work here?
I went to graduate school for public health and also worked in a science wet lab. After I graduated, I wanted a role that used both sets of skills.

What skills do you need for your job?
Lots of patience and flexibility.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
A life guard over the summer when I was 17. School brought me into opportunities to get where I am.

What is your favorite…
  • Hospital event:  Accessible Luxury, the people watching is amazing!
  • Food in the cafeteria: The pasta!
  • Place in the hospital: The cafeteria because that’s where the pasta is!
What’s your favorite…
  • Place to travel: This year I’d say my favorite place to travel has been Marrakech in Morocco, but I’m planning an adventure to Croatia this fall and it has beautiful beaches.
  • Type of food: Mediterranean
  • TV show: Lately I’ve been watching a bunch of documentaries on Netflix.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Dimensional storage- imagine all the things I could take with me on trips if everything fit in one bag like Marry Poppins!

What did you want to be when you grew up?
An astronaut, a fashion designer and an airline pilot all at the same time.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I rode a camel in the Sahara dessert.

What’s the last book you read?
David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

What kind of animal would you be?
An ocelot

How long is your commute? What do you do on the drive?
My commute is fairly short. I prefer to listen to music or NPR, depending on my mood.

What is something people don’t know about you?
In middle school I broke my thumb in tumbling class and to this day it’s the only bone I’ve ever broken.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?
I don’t care for karaoke.

How many siblings do you have?
Two siblings, an older and younger sister. All three of us have distinctly different personalities, so it’s always exciting when we are home at the same time to see my parents.

Who is your hero?
Lesley Abdela, Malala Yousafzai, Bob Dylan and Sarah Harris from the UK

If you were an Olympian, what sport would you compete in?
I used to do dance and gymnastics as a kid, so I would choose rhythmic gymnastics since it combines a bit of both.

Fried snails
