Get to Know our Staff: Angie Barnett, Orthopedics

What is your job title/your role at Scottish Rite for Children?
I have two roles at Scottish Rite. I am the nurse coordinator for the Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) clinic, plus the nurse coordinator in the Hand Clinic with Dr. Stutz

What do you do on a daily basis or what sort of duties do you have at work?
The OI clinic meets on the third Wednesday of the month. Before that day, I ensure that our patients have met with the multidisciplinary team, which includes Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, Child Life, Family Services, Therapeutic Recreation, Dental and Psychology. We also work with Children’s Medical Center for infusions and bone density scans. The OI population is usually with us throughout their childhood, and our team wants to make sure that we can help them in any way possible. When I am with the hand team, our busy clinic meets two to three times a week, between Dallas and Frisco. I help plan and coordinate surgeries and appointments for Dr. Stutz.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here or what led you to Scottish Rite? How long have you worked here?
My very first real job was as a cashier at Kroger. I have worked at Scottish Rite for two and a half years. Prior to coming here, I was a nurse manager in a NICU. One day I decided that I wanted to try something new and reached out to one of my old managers, who at that time, was working at Scottish Rite. She told me great things about the organization, and I decided to make the leap. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite?
I really enjoy how we take such great care of our kids and their families.

Tell us something about your job that others might not already know.
The hand clinic sees more than just fracture patients. We also see patients who have brachial plexus palsy. Brachial plexus palsy is an injury to the nerves in the neck that can cause the arm on that same side to lose function or to have altered function.

What was the last thing you read?
Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann

What was the best vacation you ever took and why?
My family went on a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas. There was so much to do for the entire family. We made so many good memories!

Do you collect anything? How did you start?
Drinking glasses from wherever I travel. I started on the first trip I ever took as an adult by looking for an easy to pack souvenir, and I have continued doing it.
