Get to Know our Staff: Chris Zuloaga, Therapy Services

What is your role at Scottish Rite for Children?
My role at Scottish Rite can best be described as being responsible for the daily workflow that allow the Therapy Services department staff to work in the best possible environment. My team says that I am the glue that holds the department together and I actually like that because I perform a lot of different tasks. As the department assistant, I work to build relationships with the vendors we use to purchase equipment that is needed for our department. I process the necessary documentation for our patients to receive custom mobility equipment. I assist our front office staff with answering the phone, scheduling and other needs that arise. On a daily basis, the majority of what I do includes maintaining an environment in which our therapists can work to the best of their abilities and to ensure that our families and patients are provided with a great experience.

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite?
I enjoy working for and being part of an organization where everyone works together, like a big happy family. Everything we do changes the lives of our patients and their families. I love that I can be a part of that, even if it is not directly through patient care as a provider. As part of Therapy Services, I enjoy seeing the success and progress that our patients make when they come through our doors. My team is a huge reason why I love what I do and why I enjoy working here.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here? How long have you worked here?
My first job was actually as a restaurant server when I was in high school. Through college, I worked for the intramural department as well as for the university, in a role where I assisted customer sales reps for all of the printing and press jobs for the University of Texas system. My undergrad degree is in exercise science and my original plan was to go to PT school and become a physical therapist. However, after college I worked in an outpatient facility in Austin and found that I prefer the admin/business side of what keeps a practice running. I was hired as a contract employee with Scottish Rite the day before I moved to Dallas and it turned out to be such a blessing. After a year, I was officially hired and I have now been with the team for about three years.

What’s the coolest or most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
Along with working full time, I am also in school full time (online/nights), working on a dual degree program where I am earning my MHA and MBA. My dream is to continue working with Scottish Rite to grow my career and I am fortunate that my director and other staff are assisting me on my journey.

What are you currently watching on Netflix/Hulu/TV/etc.?
The most recent show I finished watching on Netflix is called Dark. I am honestly still confused by it, but it was such a great show. Before that, I watched Ozark!

What would be the most amazing adventure to go on?
My amazing adventure would be to backpack/travel through Europe. I would also like to see the Northern Lights at some point in my life and I have always wanted to go to Fiji.

What are some small things that make your day better?
Definitely seeing my team at work, chatting with them, seeing them smile and knowing that they appreciate all that I do for our department. And coffee.

What is special about the place you grew up?
This is a tough question that I never know how to answer. I was born and raised in El Paso, TX. So, I guess it is special because I was raised there.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
I love to play basketball and work out when I can. However, now that summer is here, I spend all my free time out at the pool and soaking up the sun.
