Get to Know our Staff: Maria Torres, Environmental Services

What is your job title/your role at Scottish Rite for Children?
I am the Environmental Services and Laundry Services Manager. My role is to make sure the whole facility gets cleaned daily and that all areas receive clean linens.

What do you do on a daily basis or what sort of duties do you have at work?
My duties vary day-by-day depending on patients in surgery, inpatient unit and in clinics. My duties also depend on how many staff I have on-hand. That goes from supervising staff to taking out trash, etc.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here or what led you to Scottish Rite? How long have you worked here?
My first job was picking up tomatoes in California at the age of 16, and then I went into the hotel business for many years. I’ve been with Scottish Rite for Children for 17 wonderful years.

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite?
Everything! There is not a day that I wake up not wanting to come to work.

Tell us something about your job that others might not already know.
That’s a tough one, I believe everyone knows what I do in Environmental Services.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
Spain, and I’m looking forward to going back someday soon.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
I love to watch the Cowboys and play volleyball.

What’s one fun fact about yourself?
Not sure if it is fun, but I am a freak about having things organized.
