Get to Know our Staff: Nicole Hicks, Family Services

What is your role at Scottish Rite for Children?
I am a family services counselor at the Frisco campus. On a daily basis I speak with families in clinic or over the phone about Crayon Care (Scottish Rite's financial assistance program), price estimates and billing questions. My main focus is to let families know about Crayon Care, so they won’t feel anxious about costs.

What led you to Scottish Rite? How long have you worked here?
I moved to Texas from Savannah, GA in 2018. At that time, I worked for a different hospital. That hospital ended up being purchased and my patient advocate position was eliminated. I saw a Scottish Rite TV commercial, and I remembered one of my co-workers mentioning a new location that was about to open in Frisco. I admired the work being done here, and there happened to be an open position for the same type of work I had been doing in Savannah. December marked my two-year anniversary!

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite for Children?
I enjoy the atmosphere. Everyone is genuinely happy to help our patients get the care that they need.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
My first job was working at Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts. Yes, they were combined. I sold ice cream and donuts. My first “real” job after college was working for Blue Cross Blue Shield of California. My degree is in public health, so I always knew I wanted to help people in a health care setting.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy watching TV and catching up on the latest movies. I’m more of a homebody, but I enjoy getting out of the house to shop.

What’s something—big or small—that you’re really good at?
I’m really good at putting outfits together. I like to see how different colors and textures work together, as well as seeing the small details that make a difference.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was a kid I wanted to be a doctor. Then, I changed to physical therapy. When I got to college, I decided that public health was my calling.

What’s one hobby you’d love to get into?
I would love to try photography. I often see details that other people may not notice.

What’s the first concert you ever went to?
The first concert that I ever went to was a Destiny’s Child concert in Savannah, GA, with my friends. The group was just starting out and it was the original group members - Beyonce, Kelly, LeToya and Latavia. Since then, I have been to several other concerts, but my favorite one was when I saw PJ Morton at House of Blues in New Orleans.
