Get to Know our Staff: Shay Nwachukwu, Sports Medicine

What is your role at Scottish Rite for Children?
I am the nurse coordinator for the non-operative sports medicine physicians at our location at The Star.

What do you do on a daily basis?
I work with a few different providers and my days differ regarding my duties. I am primarily based at the Star location, but I also work at the Frisco campus. I work with the non-operative sports physicians who specialize in general sports medicine, sports neurology, adaptive sports medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasounds/injections. Typically, in the clinic, we see kids who have sport related injuries. I am normally placing orders for my providers, assisting with procedures and returning patient phone calls.

What was your first job?
I struggle with recalling my first job. However, my initial jobs were working for the front desk at my college dorm and working as a nanny.

What path did you take to get here or what led you to Scottish Rite? How long have you worked here?
I started as an adult oncology nurse and then worked at a pediatrician's office. I’ve been working at Scottish Rite for the last year and half. When I was growing up, I was a Scottish Rite patient! I saw Dr. Richards for Legg-Calvé-Perthes. One summer I was hospitalized for a week and I remember crying when they discharged me to go home. I always knew I wanted to come back to Scottish Rite because it holds a special place in my heart.

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite?
I love the culture. I can honestly say everyone goes above and beyond and we all want the best for our patients.

What’s your favorite place to eat around here?
Hutchins. I love their BBQ!

What’s something—big or small—that you’re really good at?
Cooking! I enjoy hosting gatherings and cooking for friends and family.

Are you a sports fan? Who are your favorite teams?
This is funny because I'm not a fan of sports. I do see the irony in that since I'm a sports medicine nurse. Since working here, I have learned so much about sports. My coworkers are currently teaching me about hockey! I do however LOVE all things Olympics. During those two weeks, I am glued to my television.
