Hospital Staff Travel to Canada to Present Latest Spine Research

At Scottish Rite Hospital, our doctors and researchers are committed to conducting ongoing research to discover innovative treatment options. Throughout the year, the hospital’s projects are regularly selected to be presented on an international stage with other leaders in the field of pediatric orthopedics.

This week, members from our team are in Montreal, Canada attending the 54th Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) meeting. The four-day conference welcomes medical professionals from across the world to discuss the latest research and treatment techniques for patients with spinal deformities. Staff from the hospital are presenting original research, serving as moderators and leading spine topic specific sessions. With over 1,700 submitted abstracts, resulting in 171 accepted as podium presentations and 75 as e-posters, our team had 14 projects in total selected.

Scottish Rite Hospital has a strong showing at this meeting each year. Staff continue to make an impact within the organization – being recognized as one of the top institutions that care for pediatric spinal deformities. Throughout the years, hospital doctors have served as leaders of SRS – former presidents (B. Stephens "Steve" Richards, M.D., 2012), members on the board of directors and recipients of prestigious awards.

Currently, Assistant Chief of Staff Lori A. Karol, M.D., is a director at large for SRS. As one of the hospital’s pediatric orthopedic surgeons who cares for children with complex spine conditions, she understands the influence the organization can have to improve care. “SRS is a premier medical society which brings together some of the best surgeons from across the globe,” says Karol. “Pediatric spine disorders are complex and require constant innovation to have the best outcome for the patient. Our team has the opportunity to collaborate and learn from other leaders to provide the best possible care to children here and around the world.”
