Local Medical Professionals Gather to Learn From Our Experts

Over the weekend, Scottish Rite Hospital hosted the Pediatric Orthopedic Education Series (POES). This one-day program invites pediatricians, physician assistants, family practitioners and other medical professionals from the local community to learn from our experts. Staff hand surgeon Christine Ho, M.D., served as the program director and hospital staff made presentations and led patient demonstrations during the course.

Throughout the day, attendees heard from our multidisciplinary team on various topics within pediatric orthopedics. Orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, psychologists, rheumatologists and others shared their expertise and provided a well-rounded educational program. Topics presented included:

The Injured Teenage Athlete
  • How to examine a knee and when to order an MRI
  • Getting athletes back in the game after an injury
  • Psychosocial side of recovery after an injury
Hip Disorders
  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
  • Adolescent hip pain
  • Psychosocial side of hip preservation surgery
Back Pain and Scoliosis
  • When to know if back pain is something more
  • Referring vs. observing scoliosis
  • Psychosocial side of back pain
As an institution dedicated to treating the whole child, POES provided the medical community a look into how we do just that – care for the child: mind, body and spirit. This year’s program was unique because attendees heard from hospital psychologists, an integral part of the hospital’s care team, and received insight of how that department works with our orthopedic staff to give patients the best care and experience.

As leaders in pediatric orthopedics, our experts are here to be a resource to other health care providers. We are committed to providing the best possible care to our patients and will continue to share our knowledge to advance the care and treatment for children around the community.
