Share Your Story: Clara's Dance

Meet Clara, a patient seen by our Rheumatology experts. Learn more about her journey below.

Blog written by Clara's mom, Stacy of Aubrey, TX.

During the holidays of 2010, we first noticed that Clara had a rash on her joints and was experiencing muscle weakness. Her pediatrician referred us to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and we were able to see Dr. Nassi in the Rheumatology department. After several different tests, including an MRI and swallow test, Dr. Nassi diagnosed Clara with juvenile dermatomyositis. This is an autoimmune disease that impacts muscles, skin and blood vessels. Soon after Clara was diagnosed, she underwent a muscle biopsy at the hospital.

Our family, especially Clara, found so much comfort with the child life specialists at the hospital. This group of people made hospital stays and lab visits so much more tolerable. Through the years, Clara became very close with Ms. Sheila in the lab. It is a wonderful feeling to be greeted by so many friendly and familiar faces each and every time we are at the hospital.

Clara is now 14 years old and currently in remission, thanks to the knowledgeable doctors and nurses at the hospital.

She loves to tumble, dance and is a member of multiple dance teams. One even recently performed at the hospital! We love everything about this place – the facility, the volunteers and the staff – everyone and everything is amazing.
