Meet Kasie – a patient who is seen by our spine experts. Learn more about her journey below.

When I was 13, my mom noticed that my back was not as straight as it should have been. We went to my pediatrician, who then referred us to Scottish Rite for Children. My parents and I met Dr. Johnston (or Dr. J as my dad called him) at my first appointment.

During that visit, I had some X-rays taken so they could check out my spine. I was diagnosed with scoliosis and because my curve was already severe, surgery was my best treatment option. I think my spine was at a 100-degree curve! Leading up to my surgery, I remember having an MRI and more X-rays, so the doctors could get a really good look at my spine. My surgery was in February 2008 and then my last appointment with Dr. Johnston was in May 2013. I was a patient at Scottish Rite for five years!

My favorite thing about going to Scottish Rite was seeing the giant flying car in the lobby. I loved looking up at every little detail. My overall experience at Scottish Rite was great. Everyone took great care of me and got me back to doing what I loved.

Dr. Johnston was my favorite person there because I knew that he was going to fix me.

Now that I'm an adult, I feel like I can look back and really reflect on what I went through. I understand more about how and why my treatment worked. Basically, Scottish Rite means that I got to be a kid again and live my life.
