Meet Sophia, a patient who is treated by our spine experts. Learn more about her journey below.

Hi everyone, I’m Sophia and this is my scoliosis story. I was diagnosed in October of 2018, after noticing a few symptoms that led us to seek medical attention. I had constant back pain and my hips and shoulders appeared to be uneven.  
 
We were told that Scottish Rite Hospital was the place to go for scoliosis, so my mom made an appointment for me. After our initial visit, we learned just how serious of a curve I had and that we needed to take action. On August 13, 2019, Dr. Sucato performed a spinal fusion surgery to help correct my spine.
 
Ever since my surgery, I have stayed very involved at the hospital. I created T-shirts that I sell, and then donate the proceeds back to the hospital. I have also been able to connect with other spinal fusion patients and have had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Sucato in one of his clinics.

Since the beginning of my journey, Scottish Rite Hospital has been a beacon of hope to my family. 

I always look forward to my appointments because I enjoy seeing my favorite doctors and nurses. I love knowing that these amazing doctors give children back their childhood – just like they are doing for me. In my mind, everything about this place means that I am getting closer and closer to getting back to feeling better and being able to do more of my favorite things – like my aerial silks! 
 
This hospital has truly sparked my interest in the medical field. Because of the care I have received, I want to become an orthopedic surgeon like Dr. Sucato or a pediatric nurse just like my nurses. I love learning about scoliosis by watching the Facebook live videos. I have been inspired to make my own videos so I can share my experience and give advice to others that may be going through something similar. Scottish Rite Hospital - thank you so much for giving my family and I hope!
