The Hospital Celebrated the 40th Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship

Last week, Scottish Rite Hospital celebrated the 40th anniversary for the Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship (BCVP). The program was established in honor of Brandon Carrell, M.D. – the hospital’s chief of staff from 1945-1978. Since its inception, the two-day educational course has brought together staff and hospital alumni to discuss the latest advancements in pediatric orthopedics.

For the past 40 years, the legacy of the program continues to cultivate strong relationships, both professional and personal. This year was special as former fellows from across the decades participated throughout the program as moderators and case presenters. Peter Newton, M.D., a graduate of the hospital’s Dorothy & Bryant Edwards Fellowship in 1993 returned to lead the course and share his expertise in treating pediatric spinal conditions. He is the chief of the division of Orthopedics & Scoliosis at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego and a clinical professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Program director and Chief of Staff Daniel J. Sucato, M.D., M.S. was excited to welcome former fellows to celebrate this occasion. “For 20 years, I have attended the Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship,” says Sucato. “Experiencing it as a fellow, as an orthopedic staff member and now as the program director, I have witnessed the true spirit of Scottish Rite Hospital. The 40th anniversary is a celebration of both family and education as this program brings together some of the brightest and most talented experts in pediatric orthopedics.”

The educational course continues to serve as an opportunity for the current fellowship class and orthopedic residents to present on their respective research projects. This year’s program highlighted clinical research studies in the areas of spine, sports related concussions, gait analysis, cerebral palsy, fractures and foot conditions.

As the Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship commemorated its 40th year, staff and alumni were able to reflect on the impact this conference has had on their professional lives. The hospital is honored that this tradition was started decades ago and looks forward to its success in the future.
