The Learn to Golf program gives Scottish Rite for Children patients throughout Texas with physical challenges a hands-on introduction to the game of golf. The program provides the tools and instruction needed for patients to participate in and reap the rehabilitative benefits of the game. Learn to Golf was launched in 1998 by the hospital’s Therapeutic Recreation department and was built upon the National Amputee Golf Association’s First Swing program.
Each year, Scottish Rite patients ages 6 and older from cities across Texas are invited to participate in Learn to Golf clinics. The clinics have been held in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Longview, Lewisville, Bullard, Lubbock, Odessa, San Antonio, Lewisville and Frisco. Patients receive specialized training from golf and allied health care professionals, a rule book and golf equipment, if needed. In addition, Scottish Rite may assist patients in finding golf instructors in their area who provide junior golf lessons and programs.

Golf and allied health care professionals learn methods for teaching golf to patients with physical disabilities in the program’s Tee Up for Teaching seminars.
