MORE ABOUT SURGERY
Inpatient Surgery
When your child needs surgery that requires a hospital stay, you want the best care possible from a facility designed to support your child and family.
Scottish Rite’s inpatient surgery program offers comprehensive care from the moment your child’s provider recommends surgery through preoperative care, the procedure itself, recovery and beyond.
What to Expect
Inpatient surgeries for children are often major procedures that require lots of preparation. Our preoperative nurses work closely with families in the weeks and months leading up to a patient’s procedure to coordinate care with specialists. Our psychologists and child life specialists also participate in preoperative planning to care for your child’s mental and emotional health.
During your stay, we aim to help you and your child feel as comfortable as possible. Our 33 inpatient rooms at our Dallas campus feature private bathrooms, TVs and chairs that extend into a single bed for a parent to stay with their child.
Our child life team hosts special activities to entertain patients in their down time, and inpatients can visit with furry friends during our weekly pet therapy sessions.
Most children only need to stay for a few nights, but some treatments require patients to stay a few months as they prepare for or recover from surgery. Our inpatient coordinator will work with you to enroll your child in our school program, which helps ensure kids in kindergarten to 12th grade don’t fall behind in school while they’re in the hospital.
As your child recovers, they will receive comprehensive follow-up care and therapies from physical and occupational therapists and our therapeutic recreation specialists.

Outpatient Surgery
Outpatient surgery at Scottish Rite for Children is available for patients whose operations do not require an inpatient stay.
Outfitted with the latest surgical equipment, Scottish Rite offers procedures for fractures, orthopedic conditions and sport-related injuries that can be performed in an outpatient setting without an overnight stay.
What to Expect
When patients arrive for surgery, they will check-in and meet everyone involved in their care, including a dedicated pediatric anesthesiologist, whose No. 1 priority is keeping them comfortable and safe.
A parent or legal guardian must be present throughout the entire surgery process from admission to discharge. If the patient is older than 18, an adult must participate in the discharge process and take the patient home. Family members or care givers can wait in our spacious surgery waiting areas.
Once the surgery is complete, patients will be taken to our post-anesthesia care unit for monitoring. They will then be taken back to their private room where you can sit beside them until they are ready to go home.
